Interior Design of the Year: Leisure and Entertainment Slider Station, Bishop Design Associates
This year’s Interior Design of the Year: Leisure and Entertainment award winner is Slider Station by Bishop Design Associates, a unique dining concept located in Muscat, Oman.
Drawing inspiration from 1950s America gas stations, graphics and memorabilia, the space is defined as ‘industrial chic’ and ‘urban retro’. “The challenge was to create an environment that was somewhat theatrical,” explained Paul Bishop, managing partner, Bishop Design Associates. “This was achieved throughout the use of corrugated metal ceilings, distressed wooden flooring, polished concrete, flamed and rusted metal sheets and heavy distressed, painted-out brickwork.”
The space features a selection of different zones offering a range of cuisines. Judges commented that “the wood and brick background and finish make it feel like such a grounded place, but still hip and modern.”
Slider Station is a roll-out concept, so there are many more to come, said Bishop. “It’s a groundbreaking idea but also very economically done. It’s very raw and very industrial. I think the whole retro thing is coming back, so maybe that helped us in winning the award this year. It’s been a tight two years, everyone knows that, and we’ve all put our heads down to try and maintain a professional practice. Were lucky our clients have remained loyal.”
